A vital guide to the South African Wine Industry
The 12th annual edition of the Sawid (2010/11) is more packed with information on the wine industry than ever before.
This 516 page volume (A5 soft cover), is from the WineLand Publications stable – which, among others, also publishes the monthly WineLand magazine, mouthpiece of the South African wine industry.
At the helm as editor was Hermanus-based Romi Boom, who handled the research and writing for the ninth successive year.
The Sawid's comprehensively updated wine producers' section now lists 1 184 producers registered to make wine, who operate through 936 active wineries – from garagiste and boutique wineries right up to mammoth producing wholesalers.
It also lists 900 winemakers and 425 viticulturists, while the brand index comprises 1 668 brands. Also listed are no fewer than 53 central organisations. These include Sawis, VinPro, Vititec, Ernita Nursery, the Vine Improvement Association and the Wine and Spirit Board – which all contributed to the wealth of information provided in what is essentially a guide to who's who and what's what in South African wine.
The producers' section alone spans 182 pages and gives contact information, regions, production volumes, details of owners, winemakers and marketers etc. The directory also lists wine shows and competitions, with contact details and latest results, as well as wine writers, suppliers of products and services to the industry, vital technical information, altogether 23 wine and brandy route offices – with the relevant maps – and comprehensive industry statistics.
