The four clubs (finalists) in the 36th annual Blaauwklippen Blending Competition 2019 will have to wait until Friday, 18 October 2019 when the winner will be announced during a lunch prize giving ceremony at Blaauwklippen Vineyards for media and invited guests.
The four finalists are: Lydenburg Wynproewersgilde (Mpumalanga), SLVWG – serious lovers of Vines, Wines and Grapes (Western Cape), Thursday Club (Gauteng) and Wingerd Vista (Western Cape)
This year the Blaauwklippen Blending Competition will be celebrating 36 years of taking the novelty of the blending process to wine clubs all over South Africa, making it one of the oldest wine competitions in South Africa.
The challenge was to blend and create an accessible wine with layers of fruit on the nose and pallet. The final blend was to consist of the following 4 wines:
• Zinfandel 2018
• Merlot 2018
• Shiraz 2018
• Petit Verdot 2018
All four of these cultivars had to be used in the final blend with no more than 50% of each component and a minimum of 5% of each component used.
The winning blend will be sold under the BBC label in a Magnum (1.5 litre) bottle, and the winning team will be recognised on the wine bottle label – a great honour!
