Organic and biodynamic Stellenbosch wine producer, Longridge Wine Estate and Jasper Raats recently received three gold medals at the Grand International Organic Wine Awards.
The European-based Grand International Organic Wine Awards took place for the tenth time this year under the guidance of sensory experts and renowned PAR system developer Martin Dartin. The international awards for organic wines has since become one of the most important tasting events in the global organic wine sector. According to the organisers, in 2018 a total of 289 winery from 28 countries with more than 1000 organic wines were entered into the vigorous and sensory sensitive judging process.
With three gold medals and one silver medal at the 2019 awards ceremony Raats and Longridge indicated its leading status in the production of organic wines, locally and globally.
The following wines received a gold medal:
- Longridge Organic Chenin Blanc 2016
- Longridge Organic Chardonnay 2017
- Jasper Raats Single Vineyard Wines Driefontein Organic Syrah 2016
The Longridge Organic Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay are produced on the estate against the slopes of the Helderberg mountains. Both are considered top performers, consistently scoring 90+ points in the Tim Atkin South Africa Report and 4 stars and up from the South African Platter’s Wine Guide.
The Driefontein Syrah is part of the Jasper Raats Single Vineyard Wine range and produced from a two hectare single vineyard in the Helderberg wine region. The vines are meticulously cared for by hand while organic and biodynamic practices are employed, ensuring no use of any pesticides, herbicides or chemical sprays.
“Since we converted to organic and biodynamic farming in 2011 we have been content to proof ourselves against conventional wines. We changed our farming practices because we wanted to produce better and healthier wines. Only recently have we decided to take the step and measure ourselves against some of the top organic/biodynamic wines in the world and could not have asked for a better result. It’s a good yardstick to see where we are at but also the capabilities of South African wine,” says cellar master and general manager of Longridge Wine Estate, Jasper Raats.
