Results from the world’s largest and most influential wine competition, the 18th Decanter World Wine Awards, have been announced and South African wine producers managed to put in another stellar performance on the global stage.
Collectively, South Africa walked away with 1 Best in Show, 9 Platinum and 39 Gold Awards at the 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards. South Africa doubled its Platinum medal haul at DWWA 2021 with nine wines from across the Western Cape receiving 97 points, including a Chenin Blanc and a Pinotage, representing both of South Africa’s signature grapes at this high level.
The world’s largest wine competition saw its biggest year to date, with 18,094 wines tasted from 56 countries. Over 15 consecutive days in June, almost 170 expert wine judges, including 44 Masters of Wine and 11 Master Sommeliers, awarded 50 Best in Show, 179 Platinum, 635 Gold, 5,607 Silver and 8,332 Bronze medals.
The coveted Decanter Best in Show Award was bestowed to Cederberg Wines’ Five Generations Cabernet Sauvignon.
South African Decanter Platinum winners include Constantia Glen 2017 Five, Delaire Graff 2018 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Quoin Rock 2014 Black Series Brut, KWV 2017 The Mentors Perold, KWV 2019 Cathedral Cellar Sauvignon Blanc, Warwick 2018 Trilogy, Glen Carlou 2018 Collection Red Blend, Bellingham 2019 The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc, and Peter Falke 2017 Signature Kailani.
