A fire that affected more than 40% of Vergelegen Estate has been contained. In a telephone
interview with WineLand, Vergelegen MD Don Tooth said that they were still assessing the damage, but that the fire had mostly affected natural vegetation.
“We are still investigating the damage to vineyards, but at this stage it seems to be limited to fringe areas next to burnt fynbos. Because the grapes have not gone through veraison, smoke taint is unlikely, but we will certainly conduct tests and have consulted experts to assess the damage,” explained Tooth.
Vergelegen’s significant alien clearing project has been beneficial, since aliens would have burned for longer, causing more smoke and potential danger. No buildings or key assets have been affected and the fire was contained before it spread to neighbouring Lourensford.
Tooth was full of praise for the fire fighter teams, which came as far as Mossel Bay and George.
