The 11th edition of the Syrah du Monde recently took place in the village of Ampuis (Northern Rhone Valley, France). During this two-day competition, which showcased Syrah from 26 countries, international experts tasted 372 Syrah/Shiraz wines.
In a show of diversity, six countries appear among the world’s best Syrah wines in 2017. South Africa and Australia occupy the first two places with France, Bulgaria, Mexico and Canada. France obtained three gold medals on the Top 10. Mexico entered the Top 10 ranking for the first time.
Focusing on South Africa, the following five wines won gold medals: Driehoek Cederberg Shiraz 2014, Bon Courage Inkara Shiraz 2014, Gravel Hill Shiraz 2013 from Hartenberg, Constitution Road Shiraz 2013 from Robertson and Simonsig Stellenbosch Merindol Syrah 2010.
The silver medal haul for South African wines was even greater, with 10 winning wines: The Bernard series Basket Press Syrah 2014, Saronsberg Shiraz 2015, Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Stellenbosch Shiraz 2013, Ormonde Chip off the Old Block Shiraz 2014, Boschendal founded 1685 Shiraz 2015, Simonsig Stellenbosch Merindol Syrah 2012, Oldenburg Vineyards Syrah 2014, Constitution Road Shiraz 2012, Wildekrans Shiraz Barrel Select Reserve 2014, and Terra d’Aria The Soprano Shiraz 2015 from D’Aria.
