Q&A with Lucinda Heyns: Why wine should be a window to the vineyard
· 3 min read

Lucinda Heyns has worked as a viticulturist for leading South African wineries Jordan and Mulderbosch and has plenty of experience in California. She now makes wine under her own label called Illimis, Latin for “clarity” and is a reflection of her conviction that wine should be a window into a particular vineyard.

Some of Heyns’s wines will be showcased at the upcoming Women of Wine South Africa (WoWSA) Festival. The event, which is being held in celebration of Women’s Month, takes place on Sunday, August 12 from 11h00 to 16h00 at the Candlewoods Boutique Venue in Centurion, and also features craft beer, gin and spirit made by women.
Tell us about one or two of your wines that will be shown at WoWSA and what food would they pair well with? Looking for a good companion to seared tuna or smoked salmon? Think Illimis Cinsault - delicate and aromatic. If you’re not sure whether you know much about Riesling or whether you like it or not, pair Illimis Riesling with your favourite curry and you will be won over!
How will you be spending Women’s Day and what is your wish for women? My wish for women is that we will all be a little more kind to ourselves. On my holiday, I’ll spend some time outdoors – be it in the mountains or the ocean, enjoy thoughtful food, a glass of great wine with good company and who knows, maybe finally get that pedi I never get around to!
How difficult is it as a woman wine maker in what is still a male dominated industry? I never really think of men versus women in the wine industry. I believe as long as you stay true to who you are and focus your energy on making great wines, that is what will get noticed and it pays off.
Do women bring a different touch to winemaking than men? They say women have a sixth sense and I often think of myself as an intuitive winemaker.
What do you enjoy about your job? Vineyards, people, creating something and the connection between nature and what ends up on the dining room table.
Anything else you would like to add? Stop thinking about it and get your tickets for the WoWSA event! I’m really looking forward to sharing my wines with you!
In addition to the unlimited tastings on offer at WoWSA, guests will have the option of purchasing a wide variety of foods. There’s everything from mini bunny chows (chicken, lamb, fish, curry and vegetarian) served with sambals; cheese platters; lasagna with salad and paella to a taco station.
All wines at the tasting event will be on offer to purchase and drink with lunch as well as to take home. Wine Menu will deliver purchased wines for a small additional fee. Music will add to the relaxed atmosphere and there will be entertainment for children. Numbers are limited so booking is essential. Tickets are R150 a person with children under the age of 18 free: CLICK HERE.

Are wine clubs in South Africa still relevant?
A bottle of wine is rarely just about what is in the glass. Sometimes it is about the people around the table, which may explain why wine clubs have managed to stick around. The Blaauwklippen Blending Competition offers a glimpse into why this old-school tradition still has a place in a changing…
