Two South African brands – Bruce Jack Wines and Kanonkop Wine Estate – have made Drinks International’s prestigious list for ‘World’s Most Admired Wine Brands‘ in 2020.

For the tenth year running, Drinks International has published its annual survey of The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands, conducted in association with market research specialists at Wine Intelligence. The brands were chosen by the Drinks International’s academy of global drinks buyers and wine experts, including professionals from 48 different countries.

The survey provides a definitive list of the world’s best wine brands, voted for by the Drinks International Academy, which includes more than 200 global industry experts.

Drinks International editor Martin Green says it shines a light on the most iconic, exciting and innovative producers on every continent. There are thousands of wineries vying for attention on a global basis, but just 50 elite brands have made the cut. To win a place on this prestigious list is a tremendous achievement, as there are a number of fantastic producers that missed out. Congratulations to all of the brands featured this year. They have earned the respect of hundreds of wine professionals and experts spread across the globe, and they have now gained the ultimate stamp of quality.”

Wine Intelligence’s chief operating officer, Richard Halstead said: “Wine Intelligence was delighted to support the Drinks International Most Admired Wine Brands publication this year. We believe that our experience in running robust, confidential surveys and voting systems among the world’s leading figures in the wine industry aligns well with the process that has been established.”

Countries: Ten different countries are featured on the list. Italy and the USA lead the way with seven brands apiece, while France, Spain and Chile are each represented with six different brands.

Continents: Europe boasts the most wine brands with 22 in the list, from Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. Australasia is represented 10 times, along with eight from South America, eight from North America and two from Africa.

Catena Zapata in Argentina is crowned The Most Admired Wine Brand in the World.

Penfolds, Australia is crowned The Most Admired Wine Brand in Australasia after taking the number two spot overall.

Torres, Spain is crowned The Most Admired Wine Brand in Europe at number three.

Barefoot, USA takes 12th place and is The Most Admired Wine Brand in North America.

Kanonkop, South Africa finished 32nd overall and was named The Most Admired Wine Brand in Africa & The Middle East

Catena Zapata in Argentina has stormed to the top of the rankings after impressing a large number of our academy members. The family-owned winery is located in Mendoza and is famed for producing some of the world’s finest Malbec.

Penfolds, which is Treasury Wine Estates’ flagship Australian wine brand, finished second. It was the winner in 2019. Torres from Spain finished third and another Treasury brand, 19 Crimes, was a new entry in fourth place.

Previous winner Concha y Toro from Chile was fifth and Italy’s Antinori was sixth. Europe was represented 22 times in the list, which is more than any other continent.

Drinks International publisher Justin Smith said: “We are delighted to take this opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the most admired wine brands on the planet. Congratulations to the highest ranked wineries in Europe, North America, South America, Australasia and Africa & the Middle East, and to all of the brands featured in our definitive list. We look forward to continuing to celebrate the successes of iconic wine producers long into the future.”
