Namaqua Wines rebrands distribution arm in response to market trends

One of South Africa’s most established beverage players and distributors, Namaqua Wines has rebranded its distribution division as Niew Beverages.

In 2000, Namaqua Wines diversified into a multi-product beverage distribution portfolio. Now, under the leadership of CEO Koos van Dyk, the division’s rebrand to Niew Beverages is a strategic response to shifting global market dynamics and evolving consumer drinking behaviours.

“As drinking patterns change, so must Niew Beverages adapt to serve a broader segment of the beverage market. People are consuming less alcohol but choosing to buy more premium brands, while the recently-created no-and-low alcohol product category introduces new consumers which we aim to cater to,” said Van Dyk.

With the rebrand, Niew Beverages aims to establish itself as a leading sales and distribution partner for both local and international beverage brands. Moving beyond Namaqua Wines’ traditional association with boxed wine, the new identity encompasses a diverse portfolio that spans wines, spirits, and ready-to-drink offerings. It also creates room for greater innovation and premiumisation – a rapidly expanding category in today’s beverage landscape.

“While we’re incredibly proud of our heritage as part of Namaqua Wines, the new name represents our vision for the future,” said Van Dyk. “We’re creating a distribution powerhouse that expands our existing off-trade offering into on-trade.”

‘Niew’ is an anagram of ‘wine’, symbolising the business’s roots while signalling fresh beginnings with the tagline, “Life Outside the Box”, capturing the company’s evolution beyond its traditional box wine associations.

Comprehensive national footprint

Niew Beverages operates 11 branches across South Africa, including locations in Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Upington, Kempton Park, Bloemfontein, George, East London, Polokwane, Nelspruit and Vredendal. With 259 staff members nationwide, the company supplies every major liquor retailer in South Africa.

The distribution network manages an extensive portfolio of over 500 products across 14 overarching brands. These include household names such as Namaqua, Raindance (the fastest-growing boxed wine brand in South Africa), Four Cousins and Van Loveren and premium offerings like Ginologist. “As part of Niew Beverages’ expansion, we will also be welcoming a premium spirit portfolio from Sazerac, one of the world’s leading spirits producers, which will include BuzzBallz, the fastest-growing ready-to-drink beverage in the United States,” said Van Dyk.

Strategic on-trade expansion

The company has established a dedicated on-trade division to complement its strong off-trade presence, ensuring it provides brands with a complete route-to-market solution.

“We recognised that to be the partner of choice for brands, we needed to offer comprehensive coverage across all channels. Our clients can now benefit from our expertise and infrastructure in both retail and hospitality environments, with merchandising managed entirely by our team.”

The company appointed Matthew Shaw as Head of On-Trade, and Brett Kelly as National Key Account Manager for the grocer channel.
